Molson Fact Sheet
Universally Well-Liked Since 1786
“My beer has been universally well-liked beyond my most sanguine expectations.”
– John Molson, 1786

Molson, founded in 1786 by English immigrant John Molson in Montreal on the banks of the St. Lawrence River, is North America’s oldest beer brand. Like Adolph Coors, Molson was a tenacious entrepreneur and a passionate innovator. He developed his own strain of yeast for brewing, built the first entirely Canadian-made steamboat, and opened Canada's first industrial grain-distillery, which paved the way for Molson to become the first exporter of Canadian-made spirits to England.
Molson's brewing philosophy was likewise driven by passion and innovation. His legacy thrives at Molson today and is integral to Molson Coors Brewing Company’s rise as a top global brewer. The values he espoused then mirror those that guide Molson Coors Brewing Company today: integrity and respect, quality, excelling, creativity and passion.
A Heritage of Craftsmanship and Community
The pride of craftsmanship instilled by John Molson more than 220 years ago is what makes Molson’s leading beer brands, including Molson Canadian, Coors Light, and Rickard’s White, so popular with consumers. Molson Canadian is the number one beer in Canada, and Coors Light is the country’s number one light beer.
A commitment to mastery of craft, along with using the best natural ingredients, forms the foundation of brewing excellence at Molson. Many of Molson’s brewers come to the company with an education in engineering, biology, or chemistry, and a longtime brewer training program enables brewing traditions to be passed down through the generations. A small-scale trial brewery operated by Molson in Toronto lets brewmasters experiment to improve existing brews and develop new ones to keep the brand fresh.
Great beer is impossible without passion, but meticulous attention to detail ensures the consistency that makes a brand endure. Every supplier who works with Molson Coors must meet rigorous standards for ingredients and materials. Each brew is closely monitored and evaluated for quality before being distributed with the Molson name.
John Molson was also a strong civic steward who led a group of private citizens to found Montreal’s first public hospital. The company continues Molson’s commitment to corporate citizenship through charitable initiatives and sports and entertainment sponsorships.
Molson is the largest Canadian brewer with six brewery facilities and 3,000 employees located across the country.
