In April 2012, our brewery in Patna, India completed a project to replace the use of furnace oil with locally-sourced rice husk biomass. The project was undertaken as a Clean Development Mechanism activity with the aim of reducing 4,500 tonnes of GHG emissions annually and contributing to the sustainable development of the local community. Switching to rice husk biomass reduces direct GHG emissions by 72% in our Patna Brewery. Rice husk is a waste product that is generated from milling rice, and is often disposed of without beneficial use.

Prior to the project, the Patna brewery purchased furnace oil which it combusted in a boiler to produce steam for process heating. This practice contributed to growing GHG emissions in the country and relied primarily on expensive imports.

During the 1st quarter of 2012, the brewery manager and his team retrofitted the boiler to use rice husk biomass and installed a new stack. The investment amounted to over $550,000 USD which will be recovered through the generation of CDM carbon credits and lower feedstock prices.

The team also secured supplies of locally sourced rice husk, ensuring that it is not displacing use as fuel by local residents.

The results:

  • The project has been a success from both a technical and economic standpoint.
  • Over 1,300 tonnes of GHG emissions were reduced in the first 8 months.
  • Over 4,500 tonnes of annual GHG reductions are expected going forward.
  • 4 new jobs have been created in biomass handling as a result.
  • The brewery has secured a more secure and sustainable source of energy.
  • The local community benefits from the purchase of the biomass from local rice mills.
