Britain’s biggest brewer, Molson Coors, has launched Worthington’s Red Shield, the latest addition to its family of ales, inspired by the Worthington’s family heritage. A 4.2% ABV premium cask ale, Worthington’s Red Shield is brewed with both barley and wheat malts and has been designed to appeal to modern cask ale drinkers, fitting into the fastest growing segment of the cask ale market, pale premium .
Jim Appelbee, Master Brewer at William Worthington’s Brewery says: “We are very proud to introduce Worthington’s Red Shield to the market and are excited to see the results of our hard work behind the scenes come to fruition. This represents a continuation of our aim to produce accessible, light and refreshing ales to encourage more drinkers into the category. Our trials have shown that drinkers have really enjoyed the taste so we are confident the beer will be received well by the public at large and that it will be a winner for publicans behind the bar.”
Brewed at William Worthington’s Brewery located at The National Brewery Centre, Worthington’s Red Shield joins the award winning Worthintgon’s White Shield which is now nationally available on cask and a range of seasonal ales in the Worthington’s ale range.
The brewery, which opened in December last year, produced 1,600 barrels or 460,000 pints in its first twelve months. It continues over 250 years of heritage and has secured William Worthington’s future in Burton-on-Trent, the home of British brewing. Plans for the future include ramping up production in 2012 as well as introducing new beers under the Worthington’s name, with the aim of brewing up to 6,000 barrels and to begin exporting to the US.
