Attracting, developing and retaining the best talent is our single most important challenge. That is why we put tremendous energy into listening to and acting on the views of our employees. We know that employee engagement has a direct link to our business performance. More engaged employees have better safety records, higher performance, and less absenteeism.

We measure employee engagement through our annual Global People Survey, conducted by Aon Hewitt. We are confident in the accuracy of our People Survey in part because it is completely confidential. We are careful to ensure that all of our people can be comfortable and open with their responses. This helps us to create a company where passionate brand champions can achieve extraordinary results.

In 2013, over 9,000 employees were invited to take part in the survey which was administered in 12 languages. We achieved an 83% participation rate which exceeded industry expectations for a survey (60%) and our previous participation rate by 8 points. Our overall engagement improved by 6 points to 57% over our 2012 figure. We also asked our employees a number of ethical, social, and environmental questions. The index of these questions was identified as the top driver of employee engagement.

1 Beginning in 2012, we alternate every other year between conducting a survey of 100% of employees and a sample survey of 50% of the employee population.

2012 and 2013 were transition years in a couple of ways. In 2012, we acquired legacy StarBev and nearly doubled in size. We are integrating and aligning legacy processes, systems and organizational structures across the enterprise, which led to some reorganization in several functions. We made significant progress against our stretch target, especially in bringing in and engaging the 4,000 new employees in Central Europe following the acquisition. However, we still have work to do, and are using the feedback from our Survey to address key drivers of engagement across the business. We have specific action plans in place by business unit and function and will continue to raise the bar on engagement for the whole enterprise.

Our efforts are recognized externally, as well. In 2013, independent Canadians voted Molson Coors the 11th most attractive employer in Canada and we received a Randstad Award – a “people’s choice” award. Our UK division also received the exclusive Top Employers United Kingdom 2014 certification. The certification recognizes employers around the world, awarding those that provide excellent employee conditions, nurture and develop talent throughout all levels of the organization and which strive to continuously optimize employment practices.

Each regional business and global function has cascaded their survey results to employees and created targeted action plans. These plans are housed centrally in our Global People and Organization Development organization. A scorecard of progress will be reported to our Executive Leadership team on a quarterly basis to track progress against these plans. We believe raising this level of visibility will ensure progress.

We encourage our employees to participate in community and charitable activities as a way of improving our positive Beer Print, increasing team building and motivation, and linking employees to activities and issues outside of the workplace. You can see a number of case studies below:
